In one of the more bizarre interpretations of the law, Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK), who was just convicted in federal court on seven counts of corruption and ethics violations, said last night that he has “not been convicted yet.” Unfortunately, the definition of a conviction is exactly what happened to him: a jury passed a guilty verdict on his criminal deeds. Stevens, who is in a tough reelection battle against Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, has yet to appeal his guilty verdict as well.
A new Research 2000 poll shows that John McCain leads Barack Obama 48-47 in McCain’s home state of Arizona. What makes this even more shocking is that a September 29 Rasmussen Reports poll showed McCain leading Obama 59-38.
Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger, a top McCain supporter, said in an interview with NPR that Sarah Palin is not ready to take over the presidency if needed. Said Eagleburger:
I don’t think at the moment she is prepared to take over the reins of the presidency. I can name for you any number of other vice presidents who were not particularly up to it either. So the question, I think, is can she learn and would she be tough enough under the circumstances if she were asked to become president, heaven forbid that that ever takes place?
In the wake of Colin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama, where he stated Palin did not have the experience to be vice president, both John McCain and Sarah Palin dismissed Powell’s charge by citing Eagleburger’s endorsement of McCain.

A new Fox News poll shows Barack Obama leading John McCain 47% to 44%, a lead of just three points. However, as Marc Ambinder notes, Fox’s poll is somewhat flawed in that its sampling changed. Last week, the same poll consisted of 43% Democrats and 37% Republicans. This latest poll consisted of 41% Democrats and 39% Republicans, so it is to be expected that the result would show a tighter race.
Here is an even more extensive breakdown of the sampling from last week’s poll showing Obama up by 7:
This ad from Elizabeth Dole has sparked enormous controversy over its accusation that Dole’s opponent, Kay Hagan, is godless. The most controversial part of the ad is at its conclusion when a woman’s voice says, “There is no God!” The viewer is supposed to believe that it is Hagan making the comment and not a voice over. It should be noted that Hagan is a Sunday school teacher, elder and goes on missions for her church.
Sarah Palin tells ABC News that she will remain on the national political scene even if she and John McCain were to lose the presidential election. Palin is widely rumored to be gearing up for a 2012 presidential run in the event of a loss on Tuesday.
Tonight, Barack Obama will air his thirty minute commercial (with at least one portion being live) on CBS, NBC and Fox, then be the guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, followed by a joint appearance in Florida with former President Bill Clinton.
