Martinez will not seek reelection

Just hours after his greatest threat was reported to have decided against challenging him for reelection, Mel Martinez, the Republican senator from Florida, has decided to not seek reelection after just one term in office.

Within three hours of Martinez’s announcement, the Republican Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum announced that he would now consider running for Martinez’s seat. McCollum previously ran for the Senate in 2000, losing to Bill Nelson, and returned to elected office in 2007.

Other Republicans being mentioned for the seat are Congressman Connie Mack and former Governor Jeb Bush.
