Todd, Gregory & Ifill in running to take over Meet The Press

November 1, 2008

After the election and before the end of the year, NBC will announce the new host Meet The Press, which was hosted by the late Tim Russert until his death this past June. Since Russert’s death, the show has been hosted on an interim basis by Tom Brokaw, who has made it clear that he does not want the position on a permanent basis.

The New York Times is reporting that Chuck Todd, political director of NBC News, and David Gregory, host of MSNBC’s Race for the White House are the two leading contenders for the position. Todd, who was recruited for his current position by Russert, would bring an extensive knowledge of politics to Meet The Press, while Gregory, who has been NBC News’ White House correspondent, would face challenges attracting viewers.

Other names being mentioned for the position are PBS’ Gwen Ifill and CBS News’ Katie Couric. Ifill has been approached by NBC executives in order to gauge her interest in the position, but Couric has yet to have been spoken to. Couric’s name is apparently a late addition to the list because of her interview with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.
